Those who applauded Stephen Colbert's appearance before Rep. Zoe Lofgren's House Judiciary subcomittee invariably claim in some form, as did Rep. Lofgren's office, that Colbert's appearance was justified because it drew attention to the plight of migrant workers.

These people forget: activists use stunts to draw attention to an issue to get the attention of lawmakers. By the time the chairman of the immigration subcommittee is scheduling a hearing, the attention of Congress has already been obtained.

Rep. Lofgren apparently is telling us she doesn't know how to be a Congressman. Or maybe that was Stephen Colbert's hidden message.

He is a satirist, after all.
